Gathering 2013

Gathering logoThis year Bord Fáilte launched an initiative “The Gathering“, whereby Ireland will open its arms to hundreds of thousands of friends and family from all over the world during 2013, calling them home to gatherings in villages, towns and cities.

Communities throughout Ireland will showcase and share the very best of Irish culture, tradition, business, sport, fighting spirit and the uniquely Irish sense of fun. Over 70 million people worldwide claim Irish ancestry. The Gathering Ireland 2013 provides the perfect excuse to reach out to those who have moved away, their relatives, friends and descendants, and invite them home.

IMG_JPower0037Clarecastle is planning its own Gathering from 12th – 22nd July 2013.  The Clarecastle festival will be built around two very successful events that take place in Clarecastle every summer – the Clarecastle Regatta and Clarecastle’s famous Ceili at the Crossroads run in association with Clarecastle Comhaltas. The plan is to put on an exceptional 10 days of festivities in Clarecastle and invite our friends and family from near and far to come and join in the fun!

The Regatta and Ceili at the Crossroads offer very unique attractions in their own right for any visitors to Ireland.  The Regatta includes a range of river events and includes traditional currach racing on the River Fergus, the only such estuary currach racing in the country attracting contestants from all over Clare and the Western seaboard.  The Ceili at the Crossroads is a week-long festival of music song, dance including music classes for beginner, improvers and masters culminating with an open air set dancing spectacular at Skehanagh Cross.

Intermixed in the week will be a heritage week which will offer walks around the Clarecastle environs, explaining the history and dynamics of the village and how Clarecastle was once the ‘Port of Clare’.  In addition, up to twenty Community groups are involved in discussions and will be organising events during the ten day period to give a varied and exciting programme.  These include a GAA fun day, concerts, scout activities, guided river walks, boat trips, heritage tours, art workshops, teenage activities, antiques fair, golf classic to name but a few!IMG_JPower0002

Clarecastle Community Development company has set up a Committee to co-ordinate this event lead by Ian Dinan.  For more information or if you would like to become involved, please contact Ian on 086-8196571 or email

Thanks for your reply. I am sad to say that I cannot attend” The Gathering” in July but will be home in August.
However if I can contribute any information on the written material I sent you I will be happy to do so!
Good luck with ‘The Gathering’. I’m sure it will be a great sucess!
