Built Environment and Streetscape

Clarecastle Tidy Towns has carried out a lot of work in this area improving the conservation and presentation of buldings and shop fronts, making efforts to enhance to the best of their ability derelict sites and develop public spaces and streetscape of our village and its environs.

  • Streetscape Rejuvenation

For some years Clarecastle Tidy Towns has actively pursued the implementation of the draft Clarecastle Village – Action plan for Streetscape Rejuvenation 2007.  Real progress came in 2017 and 2018 after the Tidy Towns applied for funding under the Towns and Village Renewal Scheme funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development.  Clarecastle Tidy Towns was awarded €90k one year and €100k this year and the money has been used to give the centre of Clarecastle a facelift.  Unsightly overhead wiring has been removed and put underground.  Street lighting has been upgraded to attractive lantern style lamps and the footpaths are currently being replaced with new limestone curbing and cobble style paving.  The transformation has be significant.  Further funding has been applied for to continue the work but as yet we are unsure as to the possibility of additional grant support.  Hanging baskets will be replaced once the heavy work has been completed.

  • Painting

A palette of heritage colours was chosen for the paintng of buildings in the village going forward and in recent years local businesses and community groups have used the colour palette when repainting their premises.  The result has given an overall warmth and sophistication to the village and is very attractive.  The latest building to get a facelift in the summer of 2018 will be the church.
